JPL Computer Group Memoranda Collection, 1954-1974.

The collection consists of memoranda as well as assorted reports and copies of publications. The Computer Group memoranda were addressed to the members of Section 16 Computer Group. A contents listing for Memoranda 1-44, listing the title, author, date, and memorandum number is located at the beginning of Folder 1. The documents are organized chronologically, starting with #1, dated April 2, 1954, to #49, dated February 18, 1959. The only document missing from the collection is #39. The Computer Group memoranda consist of reports, circuit diagrams, schematic drawings and mathematical formulas. They deal with such topics as stable oscillators, digital to analog converters, magnetic output converters, flip-flop design procedures, and pulse generators. In 1959 there was an organizational change, and the logical numbering system of the Computer Group memoranda was broken up. There are several project reports in the collection, dating from 1959-1961, that are numbered 100, parts 1 through 7. These project reports are similar in content with the earlier Computer Group memoranda. The Circuit Design Standards notebook is labeled as belonging to A. D. Weeks. It consists of numerous mimeographed copies of articles, the earliest dating back to 1939. The original order of the document has been maintained, organized by subject. In 1960, Weeks evidently took a course in Probability, as there is a notebook in the collection containing a few course lecture notes, but the vast bulk of the notebook consists of copies of journal articles, dating between 1956-1960. Included in the collection is a doctoral thesis by John Allen Rohr entitled System Software for a Fault-Tolerant Digital Computer, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne, 1973. The name "A. D. Weeks" is written on the cover of the thesis. There is one folder describing a parking garage facility on the Pasadena City College campus. The folder consists of memoranda primarily describing the ventilation of auto emissions. A published article discussing the dangers of carbon monoxide is included. Two bundles of computer punch cards of unknown date were retained. They are identified as being the "U.S. Bus Controller" and "U.S. Bus Adapter."

The documents presented in this collection are labeled "Section 16 Computer Group Memoranda." The "Computer Group" was a subset of Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Section 16. Section 16, Component Development, was created in May 1953. In September 1956, Section 16 was transferred to Division 41, Guidance Research and Development, which was in Department 3, Guidance and Electronics. The bulk of the documents are the copies received by Allen D. Weeks, with several copies that belonged...
